Risk Factors for Diabetes


If you are at high risk for diabetes or are age 40 or older, your hemoglobin A1c (3-month average blood glucose) should be monitored at least every 3 years.

Some risk factors for diabetes:


Age: Diabetes is more common in adults over 40 years of age. However, adults under 40 years of age and more and more children and adolescents are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.


Weight: A body mass index greater than 25 is considered overweight. For Asian Americans, being 23 or older is considered overweight.


Family history. Having a parent, grandparent, or sibling with diabetes is a risk factor for diabetes.


History of gestational diabetes, which is diabetes during pregnancy. After the baby is born, blood sugar levels may or may not return to normal. It is important to follow up with routine doctor visits to monitor blood sugar levels.


Race/ethnicity: African American, Asian American, American Indian, Hispanic/Latino, or Pacific Islander
